COMPLETED PROJECTS & INITIATIVES

  • Established a non-profit fund through Akron Community Foundation and an FFA Memorial fund.

  • Dedicated a room to the new Ronald McDonald House of Akron capital campaign in Alyssa’s name (funded personally by Heidman-Malone).

  • Donated capital funds to the operating costs for the existing Ronald McDonald House of Akron (funded by Alyssa Apostolakis memorial funds).

  • Distributed Narcan kits into McDonald’s restaurants, which were donated by Project Dawn of Cuyahoga County.

  • Created a photography studio at a residential treatment center (Vista) for adolescents with mental health and drug addiction needs (funded by Alyssa Apostolakis memorial funds).

  • Purchased fly fishing equipment to be used for patients of a residential treatment center (Vista) for adolescents with mental health and drug addiction needs (funded by Alyssa Apostolakis memorial funds).

  • Conducted three fundraisers (Shopping for Alyssa, Diving for Alyssa, Racing for Alyssa), which concentrated on education and awareness (funded by FFA).

Zachary Miley of Community Health Center received two grants for his adolescent addiction prevention program, Project PANDA. They received $1,000 from FFA and $500 from an Ronald McDonald House Charities grant sponsored by Lea Heidman and Brian Malone.

YEAR END REVIEW

  • Created a web link to market and sell FFA awareness materials: wristbands, clothing, educational pamphlets, travel mugs, keychains, and car stickers.

  • Participated in an interview for a news story entitled “Heroin in the Heartland” for the CBS television program 60 Minutes.

  • Partnered with local non-profit foundations (i.e. Robby’s Voice) to enhance overall awareness of opiate addiction and prevention.

  • Participated in Medina County, Ohio, town hall meeting to educate its residents about opiate addiction and prevention.

  • Created the development of a board and committee for FFA consisting of approximately 55 local and 25 out-of-state individuals.

  • Collaborated with Akron Children’s Hospital to increase the number of adolescent treatment specialists; establish a position for a pharmacologist; and change physicians protocol the dispensation of opiates to children.

  • Spoke at a congressional hearing to facilitate the passing of House Bill 250, which limits the amount of opiates that can be prescribed by physicians.

  • FFA, Robby's Voice, and LCADA sponsored a table at the Chagrin Documentary Film Fest on "Focus on the Opioid Epidemic in Northeast Ohio." Table hosted by FFA committee member Darby Schwartz (October 8, 2016).
